01 Top 10: Gasoline-Only Sedans

02 Top 10: Hybrid Sedans

Hybrid sedans achieve significantly higher fuel economy by combining an electric motor with a gasoline engine. The regenerative braking system captures energy normally lost during deceleration, and the electric motor handles low-speed driving where gasoline engines are least efficient.

03 Sedan Efficiency by Size Class

The EPA classifies sedans by interior volume. Fuel economy does not decrease steadily with size—midsize sedans actually post the best average in this data, edging out compact sedans, because the subcompact class includes low-volume two-seat sports cars and performance coupes that pull its average down.

Moving from a midsize sedan (the most efficient class here) to a subcompact sedan (the least efficient, due to the sports-car/coupe mix noted above) costs an additional $358 per year in fuel at average MPG. The individual "top 10" models listed above still beat every class average shown here—a well-chosen subcompact or compact model can out-perform the midsize class average, even though the subcompact class average itself is the lowest.

04 Engine Size and Sedan MPG

Engine displacement is a strong predictor of fuel economy among sedans. Most efficient sedans use four-cylinder engines between 1.5L and 2.5L, while less efficient models employ V6 or turbocharged engines with higher displacement.

A 3.5L V6 sedan costs nearly $485 more per year to fuel than a 2.0L four-cylinder. Turbocharging a 2.0L engine provides more power but typically reduces fuel economy by 3–4 MPG compared to a naturally aspirated version of the same displacement.
