The EPA classifies passenger cars by interior volume, measured in cubic feet of combined passenger and cargo space. These standardized definitions determine which vehicles fall into each category.

The interior-volume cutoffs above are the regulatory definitions from 40 CFR Part 600; they are not derived from a file in our own dataset and haven't been independently re-verified against the current regulation text.

The compact class (100–109 cu ft) includes the most popular sedan segment in America. The midsize class (110–119 cu ft) offers more rear legroom and trunk space. As shown below, the common assumption that this extra space comes at a fuel-economy cost doesn't hold up in the real EPA certification data.

02 Fuel Economy Comparison

Using the full EPA/DOE Fuel Economy Guide database for model years 2024–2025, the average combined MPG for compact and midsize gasoline cars (including gasoline hybrids, which the EPA classifies alongside conventional gas vehicles in each size class) is closer than most people expect—and midsize actually comes out slightly ahead.

Midsize cars post the higher average, city, and highway MPG—the opposite of the common assumption. Only at the extremes does compact pull ahead: the single most efficient non-hybrid compact (39 MPG) beats the most efficient non-hybrid midsize (36 MPG), and the least efficient compact (17 MPG) is still better than the least efficient midsize (15 MPG). The averages tell a different story than the extremes because both classes mix efficiency-focused and performance-oriented models, and the mix isn't the same in each class.

03 Annual Fuel Cost

At 12,000 miles per year and the national average regular gasoline price of $3.30 per gallon, the annual fuel cost difference between the two classes is small using class averages—but the best/worst-case comparisons show the range within each class is much larger than the class-to-class gap.

At the class-average level, a midsize car saves about $48 to $60 per year in fuel versus a compact, depending on mileage and gas price. But the difference between a well-chosen and poorly-chosen vehicle within either class ($85 to $311, based on the best/worst non-hybrid gas models) dwarfs the difference between the classes. Which specific model you pick matters far more than whether you pick "compact" or "midsize."

04 Why the Averages Don't Match the Common Assumption

The intuitive assumption is that a smaller, lighter car should be more efficient than a larger one—and within a single model line (say, comparing a compact and midsize version of the same car), that's usually true. But it doesn't hold when comparing the EPA's full compact-class population against its full midsize-class population, because the two classes don't contain a matched set of vehicles. Weight doesn't explain the reversal either: EPA Test Car List data shows midsize cars average 4,320 lbs against 4,088 lbs for compacts—midsize cars are actually 232 lbs heavier on average, yet still more fuel-efficient. The hybrid mix in each class offers a better, verifiable explanation.

Both classes have a similar share of hybrid models (roughly 30–32%), but midsize hybrids (35.8 MPG average) post noticeably higher fuel economy than compact hybrids (32.5 MPG average)—likely reflecting specific high-volume, highly-efficient midsize hybrid sedans on the market. Meanwhile the compact class includes a meaningful number of higher-performance and turbocharged models with combined ratings as low as 17 MPG, which pull its non-hybrid average down. Together, these two effects are enough to erase the size-based efficiency gap the common assumption predicts.

05 Five-Year Cost Difference

Over a typical 5-year ownership period, the fuel cost differences from the scenarios above accumulate, but remain modest at the class-average level compared to the gap between specific models.

Over 5 years, the class-average fuel cost difference between compact and midsize is only $240 to $300—and it favors midsize, not compact. The gap between the most efficient models in each class ($510 over 5 years) is larger than the class-to-class difference itself. Buyers should weigh whichever difference applies to their specific shortlist against the midsize class's advantages in interior space, ride comfort, and crash safety ratings.
