Subcompacts have the widest efficiency spread. The subcompact class covers everything from highly efficient small cars to two-seat sports cars, so its class average (23.1 MPG) sits well below its best-in-class model (32 MPG)—a bigger gap than any other class. That means shopping within the subcompact class specifically for fuel economy, rather than assuming all subcompacts are efficient, matters more here than in any other vehicle class.
