01 Least Efficient: Large SUVs

The least fuel-efficient performance vehicles cost over $4,100 per year to fuel at current gas prices and 12,000 miles/year. Full-size SUVs and large body-on-frame trucks consistently rank among the most expensive vehicles to fuel. Their combination of high curb weight (5,500–6,500+ lbs), large displacement engines, and poor aerodynamics results in fuel economy ratings well below the fleet average.

02 Least Efficient: Performance Vehicles

High-performance vehicles trade fuel economy for horsepower. Many require premium gasoline ($4.19/gallon national average in 2024), which further increases annual fuel cost beyond what their MPG ratings alone suggest.

03 Cost vs Average Vehicle

The average new vehicle sold in model year 2024 achieves 27.2 MPG combined (EPA, The 2025 Automotive Trends Report). At 12,000 miles per year, the average vehicle costs $1,456 to fuel on regular gasoline. The least efficient vehicles cost dramatically more.

04 The Premium Fuel Factor

Many high-performance vehicles require premium gasoline (91+ octane). In 2024, the national average premium price was $4.19 per gallon—approximately $0.89 more per gallon than regular ($3.30). This premium surcharge adds significantly to the annual fuel bill.
