"Crossover" typically describes a car-based SUV built on a unibody platform (most small SUVs sold today), while "SUV" traditionally implied a truck-based, body-on-frame design (most standard/full-size SUVs). The EPA does not track this distinction separately — it groups both under "small SUV" and "standard SUV" by size, which is why every crossover in this article's rankings appears in the small SUV tables below.

This article ranks current non-hybrid gasoline SUVs by EPA combined fuel economy, from the most efficient to the least. Hybrid, plug-in hybrid, and electric SUVs are excluded to provide an apples-to-apples comparison of conventional powertrains. All MPG figures are EPA combined ratings (55% city, 45% highway).

02 Top 10 Most Fuel Efficient SUVs

The most fuel efficient gasoline-only SUVs are predominantly small crossovers with 4-cylinder engines, typically displacing 1.5 to 2.5 liters. Front-wheel drive versions consistently rate 1–2 MPG higher than their AWD counterparts. These vehicles achieve fuel economy approaching that of midsize sedans while offering the higher seating position and cargo flexibility that buyers want.

03 Bottom 10 Least Fuel Efficient SUVs

The least fuel efficient mainstream SUVs are large, body-on-frame models equipped with V8 or twin-turbo V6 engines, often with standard four-wheel drive. These vehicles weigh 5,500 to 7,000+ pounds and prioritize towing capacity and passenger space over fuel economy. Their combined MPG ratings are roughly half those of the most efficient small crossovers. (A handful of ultra-exotic and performance-halo SUVs rate even lower, but those are excluded here as unrepresentative of typical large-SUV shopping.)
