01 Introduction

The average U.S. household owns 1.83 vehicles. Most vehicle ownership statistics focus on the extremes: households with no car at all, or the total number of vehicles registered nationwide. The 2022 National Household Travel Survey's household file makes it possible to see the full picture in between—exactly how many vehicles a typical household owns, and how that number shifts with income and location.

02 How Many Vehicles Does the Average Household Own?

Across the country, the average household owns 1.83 vehicles. But averages can hide the shape of a distribution, so it helps to see the full breakdown by exact count.

Two-vehicle households are the single largest group, but not a majority—more than 6 in 10 households own either one vehicle or three-plus. That spread means "how many cars does a typical family have" doesn't have one clean answer; it depends heavily on income and where that household lives.

03 Vehicle Ownership by Income

Vehicle ownership climbs consistently as household income rises, more than doubling from the lowest to the highest income bracket.

The lowest income bracket is the only one where the average household owns less than one vehicle. From there, ownership rises steadily, though the gains get smaller at the top—the jump from under $25,000 to $50,000–$74,999 (+0.87 vehicles) is larger than the jump from $75,000–$99,999 all the way to $150,000+ (+0.25 vehicles).

04 Vehicle Ownership by Location

Where a household lives matters almost as much as income. Rural households own noticeably more vehicles than urban ones, and are far more likely to own three or more.

A consistent pattern. Rural households are less than a third as likely to have zero vehicles (2.8% vs. 9.7%) and nearly twice as likely to own three or more (31.5% vs. 17.9%) as urban households. This lines up with the lack of public transit options in rural areas, where a personal vehicle isn't optional the way it can be in a dense city.

05 Methodology and Caveats

All figures in this article are drawn directly from the 2022 National Household Travel Survey's public-use household file, weighted using the survey's household weight (WTHHFIN) to produce nationally representative estimates.

  • Vehicle count (HHVEHCNT) includes all household vehicles reported in the survey, including cars, vans, SUVs, pickup trucks, RVs, and motorcycles.
  • Income brackets are self-reported household income and grouped from the survey's original 11 categories into 6 for readability; households that declined to report income are excluded from the income breakdown only.
  • The national zero-vehicle share (8.4%) matches the figure in this site's dedicated households-without-a-car article, an internal consistency check across two independently built articles using the same underlying survey.
  • This is a single-year snapshot from the 2022 survey. This site does not have earlier NHTS cycles on file, so no historical trend is claimed.
