04 Factors That Determine Your Fuel Cost

Four variables control your annual fuel expenditure:

  • Miles driven per year. The FHWA reports the average vehicle covers 11,327 miles annually. Rural drivers and long-distance commuters may drive 15,000 to 20,000 or more.
  • Vehicle fuel economy. EPA combined ratings range from under 15 MPG for the least efficient vehicles to over 50 MPG for hybrids. Each 5 MPG improvement saves roughly $200 to $400 per year.
  • Gasoline price. The EIA national average has ranged from $1.77 (April 2020) to $5.01 (June 2022) in recent years. Every $0.50 increase adds about $231 per year at 12,000 miles and 26 MPG.
  • Driving style and conditions. Aggressive driving, cold weather, and city driving can reduce real-world fuel economy by 10% to 40% below EPA ratings.

05 How to Reduce Annual Fuel Spending
